Dies rigorose Leben (1983)

 

Story of the traumas and problems of two immigrant German families who live in a remote area of south west USA.

From memory: A German movie about German immigrants in the American desert surprises as a big melodrama with an excellent cast and beautifully photographed landscapes and settings.

 

 

Creepshow (1982)

An anthology which tells five terrifying tales based on the E.C. horror comic books of the 1950s.

Nicely reimagined homage to 50s horror comics balances humor with some nasty bits and is generally enjoyable, although the quality of the episodes vary considerably.

Halliwell (no star): "Supposedly funny, but mainly rather nasty recreation of a famous 'comic' style; far too extended for its own good."

Maltin**: "Romero nicely captures the look of a comic book..., but Stephen King's five "fantastic tales"...are transparent and heavy-handed..."

La campana del infierno (1973)

A young man is released from an asylum and returns home for revenge on his aunt and her three daughters, who had him declared insane in order to steal his inheritance.

Unusual horror thriller with a Gothic atmosphere is irritating with its ambiguous main character and a meandering plot, but surprises with some surreal, even artsy moments and some exploitative elements.
