Brother Orchid (1940)

 

When retired racket boss John Sarto tries to reclaim his place and former friends try to kill him, he finds solace in a monastery and reinvents himself as a pious monk.

From memory: Likable gangster comedy-drama surprises with an unusual, amusing premise and takes it to an uplifting ending; with a superb star cast of the time, but it's mainly the Robinson/Bogart confrontation that livens up the show.

Halliwell*: "Rather uneasy blend of comedy, drama and religion, with some good scenes."

Maltin***: "Farfetched but entertaining yarn...Sothern delightful as his ever-faithful girlfriend." 

The Old Maid (1939)

The arrival of an ex-lover on a young woman's wedding day sets in motion a chain of events which will alter her and her cousin's lives forever.

The Uninvited (1944)

A composer and his sister discover that the reason they are able to purchase a beautiful gothic seacoast mansion very cheaply is the house's unsavory past.

Superior ghost story made in good Hollywood tradition with some good Gothic atmsophere, a bit creepy, but also good-natured.

Halliwell**: "One of the cinema's genuine ghost stories, and a good one, though encased in a rather stiff production; it works up to a fine pitch of frenzy."
