The Courier (2012)

A specialist carrier is hired to deliver a mysterious case to the underworld's most dangerous hitman.

Average thriller has lots of action, but with an uninteresting, costrued plot and a disappointing ending.

Solace (2015)

A psychic works with the F.B.I., in order to hunt down a serial killer.

A good cast and some directorial expertise help, but can't quite redeem the nonsensical story of two clairvoyants in battle with each other.

 

Heist (2015)

A father is without the means to pay for his daughter's medical treatment, and as a last resort, he partners with a greedy co-worker to rob a casino.

Fairly effective thriller with some good (albeit improbable) twists; cast is good, and De Niro gets the opportunity to play a tough, but complex wiseguy character.

Red Dawn (2012)

A group of teenagers look to save their town from an invasion of North Korean soldiers.

Superfluous remake of a silly Cold War propaganda actioner has no redeeming qualities except for some watchable action, but probably worse than the original, since the premise has even less clout than it hardly had 30 years before.

Maltin**1/2: "...surprisingly watchable remake of John Milius' 1984 kids-versus-Commies shoot 'em-up. Premise is silly, performances and dialogue are uneven, at best, but some rousing action sequences have an impressive semi-documentary quality."

The Salvation (2014)

In 1870s America, a peaceful American settler kills his family's murderer which unleashes the fury of a notorious gang leader, but his cowardly fellow townspeople then betray him, forcing him to hunt down the outlaws alone.

A very traditional Western story is heightened by relentlessly taking the action to its extremes offering a great cast and quite beautiful, atmospheric cinematography.

The Resident (2011)

 

 

When a young doctor suspects she may not be alone in her new Brooklyn loft, she learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her.

 

Mediocre stalker thriller which manages to accumulate all the cliches you'd expect from the often-told plot.

 

Maltin BOMB: "Appallingly derivative stinker, barely released, goes through the usual litany of psychotic moves before screech-halt at a dime. It's incredible that any double Oscar winner would ever wind up headlining a movie like this." 

Texas Killing Fields (2011)

In the Texas bayous, a local homicide detective teams up with a cop from New York City to investigate a series of unsolved murders.

Intense and well-cast crime thriller with emphasis on atmosphere and character than on the (predictable) plot.

Maltin**1/2: "Slick psycological thriller, "inspired by true events", has atmosphere to spare but is hampered by one too many plot inconsistencies and often unintelligible dialogue."
