I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016)

A young nurse takes care of an elderly author who lives in a haunted house.

Slow-paced gothic drama fully relies on atmosphere and visual brilliance and at times creates David Lynch-like moments of surreal horror, but, in the end, it's just another ghost story.

Ballet Shoes (2007)

The story of three orphan girls, adopted by an eccentric explorer, Great Uncle Matthew, and his niece Sylvia, in 1930s London.

Pleasant and not too saccharine period piece is nicely made with an excellent cast; an above-average TV production.

Apostle (2018)

In 1905, a drifter on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with a sinister religious cult on an isolated island.

Gory horror drama has a silly plot, but is made with atmosphere, a good cast and good period detail.
