The China Syndrome (1979)

A reporter finds what appears to be a cover-up of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant.

From memory: Solid, if a bit old-fashioned political thriller; suspenseful with a good ensemble, and it manages to deliver its message.

Halliwell***: "Topical thriller-with-a-moral, absorbingly done in the old style but perhaps in the end a shade too hysterical and self-congratulatory."

Maltin****: "Heartpounding drama...is as much a probe of television news as it is a story of nuclear power - and it scores bullseye on both fronts. Port of New York (1949)

Two narcotics agents go after a gang of murderous drug dealers who use ships docking at the New York harbor to smuggle in their contraband.

Lively, fast-paced crime thriller in the semidocumentary style common in the 40/50s; well-made and worth the watch for a competent Yul Brynner starring as a villain in his cinema debut.

Halliwell*: "Good routine semi-documentary thick-ear, notable for an early appearance by Yul Brynner as villain-in-chief."

Maltin**: "Gloomy tale..."

Hell's Bloody Devils (1970)

A government agent tries to break a Neo-Fascist group in California.

He Walked by Night (1948)

Police are on the hunt for a resourceful criminal who shoots and kills a cop.

Effective crime thriller in a semi-documentary style, a bit naive, but honest and straightforward and with an exciting finale that obviously inspired Carol Reed for The Third Man.

Halliwell*: "Interesting if rather flatly handled documentary melodrama in clear imitation of Naked City."

Maltin***: "Great climax in L.A storm drains; photographed by the great John Alton. This clearly inspired Webb's creation of Dragnet."

Johnny Guitar (1954)

A strong-willed female saloon owner is wrongly suspected of murder and bank robbery by a lynch mob, when she helps a wounded gang member.

Fascinating no holds barred Western with the two female leads calling the cards in a confrontation overheated with an otherwordly hatred.

Halliwell*: "Weird Freudian Western notable for a running catfight between its lady protagonists; the title character is decidedly secondary. Not exactly a good movie, butmemorable because it's almost always over the top."

Maltin***1/2: "The screen's great kinky Western...Simply fascinating with symbolism rampant throughout."
