The Naked Street (1955)

 

 

A mobster springs a condemned murderer because he got his sister pregnant. 

Standard crime melodrama is not too exciting, but is well-staged with a good cast. 

Halliwell (no star): "Semi-documentary expose melodrama about unpleasant people; reasonably proficient on its level."

Maltin**: "Good cast wasted in bland crime drama..." 

Ulisse (1954)

Ulysses' efforts to return to his home after the end of ten years of war.

Homer's epic trickled down to an adventure suitable for a younger audience; neverthless, quite entertaining.

Halliwell*: "Peripathetic adventure yarn not too far after Homer; narrative style uncertain but highlights good."

Maltin**: "Hokey, lumbering costumer..."

Against All Flags (1952)

A British naval officer poses as a deserter to trick a pirate and her cohort in 1700 Madagascar.

Agreeable, but somewhat stolid and simply staged pirate swashbuckler; the stars' performances are the main source of fun in this one.

Halliwell*: "Standard pirate yarn, almost Flynn's last swashbuckler; production below par."

Maltin**1/2: "Although not Flynn's final swashbuckler, this was his last good entry in the genre."

Hot Spell (1958)

 

 

A housewife is doing her best to keep her family together as it's slowly falling apart, a fact she's trying to ignore.

 

White-knuckled family drama and tragedy almost overdoes it, but is saved thanks to the brilliant cast. 

Halliwell*: "Overwrought domestic drama slipping perilously close to farce at times, but a good theatrical vehicle for its stars."

Maltin**: "Well-acted but dated drama...MacLaine shines as their daughter."

The Don is Dead (1973)

After his mistress is savagely beaten up a Mafia leader goes after the killer with a bloody vengeance.

A Godfather rip-off, not populated by any uomini d'onore at all; in fact, this endlessly violent and superfluous production does no honor to the many stars in the cast.

Halliwell (no star): "A failed attempt to cash in on The Godfather, this endless melodrama is boringly violent and totally predictable."

Maltin*1/2: "...trashy, derivative gangster saga."

La fabuleuse aventure de Marco Polo (1965)

Young Marco Polo travels to China to help Kublai Khan fight against rebels, headed by his own son, with a new invention: gunpowder.

Entertaining and colorful, but wildy unhistorical Hollywood adevnture tale.

Halliwell (no star): "Curious mixture of melodrama and pantomime, with a star cast half playing for laughs."

Maltin**1/2: "Laighable mini-epic, extremely choppy, with episodic sequences pretending to recount events in life of medieval adventurer."

City For Conquest (1940)

A young man is a content truck driver, but his girl shows potential as a dancer and hopes he too can show ambition, so acquiesces and pursues boxing to please her, but the two begin to spend more time working than time together.

The Guns of Navarone (1961)

A British team is sent to cross occupied Greek territory and destroy the massive German gun emplacement that commands a key sea channel.
