The Beguiled (2017)

The unexpected arrival of a wounded Union soldier at a girls school in Virginia during the American Civil War leads to jealousy and betrayal.

A remake of Don Siegel's movie of the same title with all the good parts left out; the intention of transforming the story into an example of feminine solidarity backfires by omitting all racial, erotic and social subtexts.

Trumbo (2015)

In 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood's top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.

Good depiction of the effects of McCarthy's Hollywood blacklistimg concentrates on Dalton Trumbo's life, but gives enough details of the times; period detail and cast are excellent.

When an aspiring model moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.

 

Visually gorgeous and mesmerizing tale that takes its view of the beauty industry to a morbid and slightly ironic extreme.

The Door in the Floor (2004)

A writer's young assistant becomes both pawn and catalyst in his boss's disintegrating household.

A marriage drama with some great performances, but a predictable plot.

On second view: still true, simply not that exciting.
