Supergirl (1984)

 

After losing a powerful orb, Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch. 

Of course, it's a silly comic strip adaptation, but made with lots of wit and irony, exciting sequences, and Dunaway has a field day as the bad bad witch.

Halliwell*: "Playful comic strip spectacular which entertains in Wizard of Oz style for most of its way but was savaged by the critics."

Maltin*1/2: "This comic-book movie is a super-drag: long, dull, heavy-handed. Slater is cute but bland in title role; Dunaway is a predictably campy villainess." 

The Stunt Man (1980)

A fugitive stumbles on a movie set just when they need a new stunt man, takes the job as a way to hide out and falls for the leading lady.

From memory: Quite original, fast-paced, entertaining tale with some black humor; Peter O'Toole's performance is outstanding.

Halliwell*: "Overlong, curious, but sometimes compelling melodrama which entertains on the surface while its actual aims are harder to fathom."

Maltin***: "An outrageous black comedy  in which reality and make-believe blur...Crammed with first-rate action and sly wit, plus a mesmerizing performance by O'Toole as the Christ-like Eli Cross. Attention must be paid, but the rewards are more than ample. Dazzlingly scripted...and directed; amusing score..."

Caligola (1979)

The story of Rome's most infamous Caesar, Gaius Germanicus Caligula.

From memory: messy and nasty big-budget exploitation sword-and-sandal epic is quite disagreeable entertainment, but interesting for its audacity and the amount of first-rate stars that risked their reputation by participating.

Halliwell (no star): "What would have been a dull and worthless pseudo-epic has been perked up by violence and hardcore sex. The result is a vile curiosity of interest chiefly to sado-masochists."

Maltin*1/2: "Chutzpah and 6m.of not-bad hard-core footage earn this half a star for the faithful, but most viewers  will be rightfully repelled."

The Night of the Generals (1967)

In 1942, a Polish prostitute is murdered in Warsaw, and suspicion falls on three generals, and a major of German Intelligence seeks justice despite the ongoing atrocities committed during WWII.

Despite good pruduction value the movie goes on way too long at a slow pace, mixes too much historic events with the plot and never really arouses much interest for its crime mystery.

Halliwell**: "A curiously bumpy narrative which is neither mystery nor characzer study but does provide a few effective sequences and impressive performances. The big budget seems well spent."

Maltin*1/2: "A WW2 whodunit, film has potential but gets lost in murky script, lifeless performances. A dud."

Stardust (2007)

In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

Good production value and a star cast can't conceal that this fairy tale's story is overburdened and quite confusing.

Maltin***: "Wondrously imaginative fantasy yarn, adapted from Neil Gaiman's novel, creates a world all its own and is dotted with colorful characters, but goes on far too long."
