The Godfather (1972)

 

The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.

A flawless epic with mastery to be found in all parts, a true cinema classic.

On re-watching: every new reviewing reveals more fascinating details and more context in the narrative.

Halliwell****: "A brilliantly-made film with all the fascination of a snake pit: a warm-hearted family saga except that the members are thieves and murderers. Cutting would help, but the duller conversational sections do heighten the cunningly judged moments of suspense and violence."

Maltin****: "The 1970s' answer to GONE WITH THE WIND, from Mario Puzo's novel...Pulp fiction raised to the highest level; a film of epic proportions, masterfully done, and set to Nino Rota's memorable music. Absolutely irresistible."

 

The Killing (1956)

Crooks plan and execute a daring race-track robbery.

Tough noir-style heist drama, meticulously directed with an unusual time structure and a first-rate cast.

On rewatching: perfect noir thriller, every view you find new details.

Halliwell**: "Incisive, entertaining, downbeat caper movie clearly influenced by The Asphalt Jungle and Rififi."

Maltin***1/2: "The film that really put Kubrick on the map - a case study of a racetrack heist, with a colorful cast of characters...Major flaw: the Dragnet-style narration."

I watch the Godfather trilogy at least once a year; nothing to add to my previous comment.

Shotgun (1955)

When a vengeful bandit ambushes and kills a Marshal with a shotgun  aDeputy Marshal pursues the killer's gang.

Johnny Guitar (1954)

A strong-willed female saloon owner is wrongly suspected of murder and bank robbery by a lynch mob, when she helps a wounded gang member.

Fascinating no holds barred Western with the two female leads calling the cards in a confrontation overheated with an otherwordly hatred.

Halliwell*: "Weird Freudian Western notable for a running catfight between its lady protagonists; the title character is decidedly secondary. Not exactly a good movie, butmemorable because it's almost always over the top."

Maltin***1/2: "The screen's great kinky Western...Simply fascinating with symbolism rampant throughout."
