Hardware (1990)

 

The head of a cyborg reactivates, rebuilds itself, and goes on a violent rampage in a space marine's girlfriend's apartment. 

Good-looking sci-fi thriller despite its low budget is a noteworthy achievement, although there are many derivative elements in its plot and effects.

Halliwell*: "A low-budget science-fiction horror story, filmed in the style of a rock music video."

Maltin**: "Surprisingly well made, but recalls many earlier (and better) films. Heavy violence nearly earned this an X rating, before it was trimmed." 

The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

 

 

After being rescued and brought to an island, a man discovers that its inhabitants are experimental animals being turned into strange-looking humans, all of it the work of a visionary doctor.

Big-budget and star-cast adaptation of H:G. Wells' classic sci-fi novel lands a fascinatingly wild and hilarious fail on almost every level, among which Marlon Brando's ridiculous performance is only one of the many facets you need to see to believe.
 

Halliwell (no star): "Incoherent horror, notable for one of Brando's more eccentric performances, mercifully brief."

Maltin*1/2: "Heavy-handed retelling of H.G. Wells' novel...Grotesque in the extreme, obvious, and ultimately pointless, but Brando devotees will want to check out his flamboyantly silly performance, and makeup buffs should admire Stan Winston's remarkable creations." 

 

 

Color Out of Space (2019)

A secluded farm is struck by a strange meteorite which has apocalyptic consequences for the family living there and possibly the world.

Entertaining H.P. Lovecraft adaptation has a nice B-movie touch to it, while offering some good and imaginative special effects and a deliciously over-the-top performance by Nicholas Cage.
