My Cousin Rachel (1952)

 

 

A young man plots revenge against the woman he believes murdered his cousin, but his plans are shaken when he comes face to face with the enigmatic beauty.

Superior adaptation of a Daphne Du Maurier,novel has, similar to Rebecca, a mystery about an enigmatic  woman and good Gothic settings and atmosphere as well as a competent cast, although the the ending is somewhat confusing.
 

Halliwell*: "Well-wrought but dramatically unsatisfactory Victorian melodrama from a bestseller; plenty of suspicion but no solution makes Rachel a dull girl."

Maltin***: "Successful filmization of Daphne du Maurier mystery..."

Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

In a totalitarian future society, a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love.

Accurately gloomy and defeatist adaptation of Orwell's classic dystopian novel has some good post-war settings and a good cast; the pessimistic vision, unfortunately, is as valid as ever nowadays.

Halliwell*: "Pointless, perhaps, to make a prophetic film in the year it was supposed to be prophesying, but this version adds a few twists to Orwell's nightmarish original and is well if sometimes confusingly made."

Maltin***: "Appropriately grim, well-cast version...Superior to the 1956 version, though the oppressive gloominess of  the second half does wear you down. Seedily impressive production design."

Raid on Rommel (1971)

In 1942 Libya, a German-speaking British Intelligence officer uses former British POWs, some dressed in German uniforms, to fulfill a secret sabotage mission inside German-captured Tobruk.

Mediocre war adventure on a B-movie level - quite a waste of talent.

Halliwell (no star): "Dispirited low-budget actioner apparently first intended for television."

Maltin*1/2: "Poor excuse to utilize old desert footage (mostly from TOBRUK) and new faces in worn-out WW2 actioner."

Sea Wife (1957)

In 1942, a cargo ship jammed with British evacuees from Singapore is sunk by a Japanese sub, and  a small lifeboat carries a beautiful woman, an army officer, a bigoted administrator, and a black seaman.
