Alien: Covenant (2017)

 

The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.

Highly professional sequel to the director's Prometheus and a great addition to the Alien saga offers a more stringent plot than the predecessor and offers lots of visually stunning scenes and shock moments; Fassbender is perfect in his android double role.

On renewed viewing:  I especially enjoy the fantastic scenery and Michael Fassbender's performance.

On rewatching: Worth the watch just to discover new details. 

 

 

It Comes at Night (2017)

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

Dark and effective post-apocalyptic drama is more focused on the psychological repercussions of a (vaguely sketched) catastrophe than on any horror tropes; although a strong effort, its elliptical tale-telling does diminish its impact.

 

True Detective, Season 3 (2019)

A macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Third time round the series continues in expected top quality of production, and again it's the two lead's extraordinary performances that holds the interest; the plot itself develops quite slowly and is construed a bit too complicatedly.

Away We Go (2009)

A couple who is expecting their first child travel around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family.

Likable, but a bit weary road movie as social satire has a good cast and some memorable scenes.

Maltin***: "Laid-back road movie...won't be everyone's cup of tea, but has a gallery of rich performances, touching moments, and laughs."

Selma (2014)

A chronicle of  Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.

Stirring historical drama, well-made in good taste, mainly convinces due to an excellent cast.
