Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)

 

 

After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

This spin-off to Suicide Squad is a far superior movie and does everything right which the previous didn't manage to do: its humorous, its action is exciting and Margot Robbie is even more convincing as Harley Quinn (and obviously enjoying the role), accompanied by a strong cast of female companions.

Gemini Man (2019)

 

 

An over-the-hill hitman faces off against a younger clone of himself. 

 

Run-of-the-mill star vehicle with lots of well-made action sequences, but hardly any depth to the plot, which is quite astonishing for its director.

The Thing (2011)

At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between a graduate student and a scientist.

OK prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing (which was in itself a remake) that tries to surpass it's counterpart with gory special effects: the result making it appear superfluous.

 On rewatching: OK for what it is -and if you can appreciate the gore.

Maltin**: "Conceived as a prequel to the 1982 version, this isn't completely unsuccessful, but the plentiful CGI visual effects can't compare to the graphic horrors of the '82 movie."

A hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.

Very off-kilter, but silly and unsavoury satire that tries to say something substantial but undercuts its own efforts; additional kudos go to Daniel Radcliffe for his attempt to estrange his Harry Potter fans by playing a farting corpse.
