The Intern (2015)

A seventy-year-old widower has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be; seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site.

Likable comedy with a great premise is quite amusing and Robert De Niro delivers one of his best performances in recent years (although his character is almost too good to be true); However, as so often in this genre, the movie does drift into sentimentality towards the end.

Colossal (2016)

Gloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in New York City and move back home, but when reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon.

Strange, slightly amusing mix of a domestic alcohol abuse story and a monster movie nicely moves along its absurd premise, but isn't really very exciting.

One Day (2011)

After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation a woman and a man are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives; they are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day.

A relationship drama propelled by Sturgess' mysterious reluctance to love Hathaway is well-played, but unnerves for exact that reason; the ending is quite a punch in the stomach.

Maltin**: "Dreary, drawn-out look at a star-crossed relationship..David Nicholls adapted his best-selling book but something's been lost in the translation; we never understand what makes Sturgess' character tick, so it's hard to care about him."
