Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

 

Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares for battle with the First Order.

Competently produced and highly entertaining continuation of the Star Wars saga, again proof that the recent productions are superior to the previous trilogies concerning characters and character development, - and diversity; Daisy Ridley's Rey is arguably the series' most agreeable hero.

On rewatching:  Although visually stunning in some sequences, this episode is in fact more generic and less entertaining on a second watch.

The man-cub Mowgli flees the jungle after a threat from the tiger Shere Khan and, guided by Bagheera the panther and the bear Baloo, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, though he also meets creatures who don't have his best interests at heart.

Highly entertaining updated version of Kipling's classic, mixing excellent CGI animation with a real  (good) actor playing Mowgli, resulting in more realistic and in parts dark and upsetting sequences for a child audience.

On renewed viewing: menawhile a guilty pleasure of mine.

Us (2019)

A family's serene beach vacation turns to chaos when their doppelgängers appear and begin to terrorize them.

Straightforward horror thriller slyly taking the doppelgänger motif to its extreme with subtle, but clear political undertones; however, an explanatory passage about the goings-on somewhat spoils the mystery.

Although it grandly delivers all the goods of a superhero comic adaptation, the makers even more successfuly create an uplifting African myth and contrast it it with the realities of our current world.

Non-Stop (2014)

An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages demanding $150 million into an off-shore account, or someone will die every 20 minutes.

An old-hat premise is turned into an above-average thriller by keeping the tension high throughout and upping the ante of the plot's possibilties to the edge of credibility.

Maltin**: "Follows a familiar textbook for this kind of thriller but delivers the goods and keeps you guessing right to the outlandish finale."

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises as the First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.

Successful rejuvenation of the Star Wars saga marrying its original antics with a modern view and a great, likable cast of new young heroes.
