Guyver (1991)

 

 

A young man discovers a mechanical device that merges with his own body, turning him into a cyborg superhero.

 

Deliberately silly - and gory - spoof with some quite fantastic monster outfits; entertainment value limited to fans of the genre.

 

Maltin*1/2: "Clumsy clumps of humor only make the contrived plot seem even more foolish."

 

 

Fortress (1992)

A man and his wife are nabbed at a future US emigration point with an illegal baby during population control and sent to a high-tech prison.

Sci-fi actioner is well-made, but mostly on a B-movie level; OK, if taken as mindless entertainment.

Halliwell (no star): "An efficient action film in a science-fiction setting, but one that is unable to escape from its own over-familiar scenario."

Maltin*1/2: "Intriguing premise is sabotaged by weak acting and a weaker script."

Michael Weldon/Psychotronic: "This is one of the best by Gordon..."

Re-Animator (1985)

A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus.

Gory horror comedy, one of the first of this kind; quite entertaining, if you can take it.

Halliwell (no star): "Gross and grisly horror comic which amused some critics."

Maltin***: "Knockout thriller and black comedy...Debut film director Gordon goes entertainignly over the line, especially in an off-color scene involving heroine Crampton and a lustful severed head. Major defect: Richard Band's music score, which is too reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann's classic PSYCHO sound track."
