Sunshine Cleaning (2008)

In order to raise the tuition to send her young son to private school, a mom starts an unusual business -- a biohazard removal/crime scene clean-up service -- with her unreliable sister.

Fairly entertaining, if not too exciting family comedy-drama solidly directed and especially watchable for the good ensemble of characters.

Maltin***: "Likable comedy-drama...The two stars are perfectly cast and aided by a handpicked ensemble."

The Great Buck Howard (2008)

A young man, much to the chagrin of his father, becomes the new assistant to an illusionist in decline.

Slightly entertaining tale is mainly watchable for Malkovich's smooth performance.

The Wolfman (2010)

Upon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man is bitten, and subsequently cursed by, a werewolf.

Nicely produced homage to the original horror classic, concerning atmosphere and the creature's appearance, offers great cinematography and period detail and a star cast, although it's a far cry from the original's impact.

Maltin**1/2: "Sober remake of the 1941 classic isn't bad but insists on expanding the story , to no good end. Del Toro's character is underwritten, while Hopkins (as his father) gets to chew the scenery. Still, Rick Heinrich's production design is handsome, Rick Baker and Dave Elsey's Oscar-winning makeup is effective, and the scare scenes are well staged, so it's not a total loss." 

A Quiet Place (2018)

In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

Above-average horror drama pulling through its unusual premise (survival by silence) with competence and ease.

The Girl on the Train (2016)

A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.

Well-made psychological thriller has a complex plot, but manages to convey it slowly adding its puzzle parts to the picture.

Sicario (2015)

An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.

This is first of all an excellent thriller: suspenseful with Blunt and del Toro offering top performances, and Roger Deakins' cinematography is spectacular; but these qualities hint at an underlying, more substantial content - which simply isn't there.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

The affair between a politician and a contemporary dancer is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart.

Despite all the credentials, good production and an intriguing premise this movie lacks any romantic felling and disappoints on the sci-fi level as well.

Maltin**1/2: "Unusual fantasy...is staged against the expansive backdrop of N.Y.C., but doesn't carry its momentum to a satisfying conclusion. Too bad; Damon and Blunt give it their best shot."

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

A military officer is brought into an alien war against an extraterrestrial enemy who can reset the day and know the future.

The story is not new, there are hardly any surprises otherwise, and the militaristic stance is unappealing; but the result is a professionally made, exciting and entertaining action movie.
