Moontrap (1989)

The Space Shuttle returns to earth, but some of the equipment brought back on it begins to behave strangely.

OK sci-fi alien invasion drama is foremost watchable for its good and imaginative special effects, but also has suspense and a welcome performance by Walter Koenig.

Maltin**1/2: "OK entertainment...Very low-budget production shows ingenuity in its special effects and imagination in the story, but dramatic values are highly valuable."

Evil Dead II (1987)

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

A frustrated circus magician from Kansas is transported to a magical land called Oz, where he will have to fulfill a prophecy to become the king, and release the land from the Wicked Witches using his great (but fake) powers.

Likable and entertaining fantasy offers some nice moments, but doesn't have the magic one would expect considering all the credentials, and it's a bit too long.

Maltin**1/2: "Elaborate, eye-filling production...can't be compared to the 1939 THE WIZARD OF OZ, aside from some winks in its direction. Fairly entertaining on its own terms but overlong and, frankly unmemorable. Braff provides consistent laughs as a talking monkey."

The Woods (2006)

Set in 1965 New England, a troubled girl encounters mysterious happenings in the woods surrounding an isolated girls school that she was sent to by her estranged parents.

Above-average horror movie which offers some spooky atmosphere, but disappoints with its solution:  a haunted forest.

Maltin BOMB: "One-note horror film is thoroughly unpleasant, when it's not dull or idiotic. A real ordeal to sit through."

The Evil Dead (1981)

Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.

Influential gorefest that still manages to shock and awe; produced with amazing cinematic expertise and lots of allusions to other movies, it's definitely only for those who can stomach the mayhem.

Halliwell (no star): "Semi-professional horror rubbish, blown up from 16mm and looking it.When released in England, it was prosecuted as unsuitable for public showing and gained a cult following..."

Maltin**1/2: "Wildly stylish, ultra-low-budget movie made by precocious college students is one of the grossest horror films ever...it provides deliriously imaginative roller coaster ride for those with strong stomachs."
