L'aîné des Ferchaux (1963)

 

Broke French ex-paratrooper turned amateur boxer Michel Maudet becomes bodyguard for the fugitive corrupt banker Ferchaux.

Odd French road movie, which is staged mostly in the USA, has elegantly construed narrative, it's nicely directed with two good lead performers, but the protagonists are quite disagreeable characters, so that one hardly develops any empathy for them.

Charlotte et son Jules (1960)

 

A jilted man rants at his mostly silent former lover. 

Satirical early short film by Jean-Luc Godard (who dubs Belmondo's voice) is slightly amusing for the misogynist and madcap rant the guy delivers, but does get enervating soon.

 

Le marginal (1983)

 

The story is about Commissioner Jordan who arrives in Marseille to combat drug trafficking activities in his own unique way.

From memory: Professionally produced action thriller with a dubious vigilante morale is mainly intended as as Jean-Paul Belmondo star vehicle and nothing more.

Halliwell*: "Fast-moving low-life thriller, with a maverick hero patterned after Dirty Harry,but much dirtier."

La sirène du Mississipi (1969)

A wealthy plantation owner is captivated by a mysterious woman with a shady past.

Offbeat Noir thriller treated more like a l'amour fou romance with some typical Truffaut touches, occasionally a bit heavy-handed and with some risible dialogue.

On rewatching: Lively drama omits the novel's noir elements and turns the story into an almost surreal romance;the director and his two stars somehow make it work.

Halliwell*: "Oddly obsessive romantic murder mystery; the hero continues to love the girl who tries to kill him, and at the end they are still together. Interesting when it is not uncomfortable."

 Maltin***: "One of the director's few flops, but any film with Belmondo-Deneuve-Truffaut combo is of interest...Always buy brand names."
