La vie d'Adèle (2013)

 

Adèle's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire and to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adèle grows, seeks herself, loses herself, and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.

Extensive, intimate lesbian romance profits from its cinéma vérité approach, good cast and a stellar performance by Adèle Exarchopoulos; however, the controversial explicit love scenes are indeed incongruent to the story and some of the dialogue seems more implausible than realistic.

Maltin***1/2: "Controversial film is directed in a fluid, naturalistic style and features several very graphic sex scenes. One might question whether the rather conventional love-and-loss story is worth three hours, but the two leads are excellent, particularly Exarchopoulos whose face - framed mostly in loving close-ups - conveys a world of conflicted feelings."

Kursk (2018)

The film follows the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster and the governmental negligence that followed. As the sailors fight for survival, their families desperately battle political obstacles and impossible odds to save them.

Fairly solid dramatization of the actual catastrophe with good production value and a capable cast is more focused on the personal tragedies and less on the political scandal, dubiously omitting Vladimir Putin's role in it completely.

The Lobster (2015)

In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel,
where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

Ambitious, absurdist satire has a great cast and some good surreal moments, but lacks any discernible humor, and it's unclear what it tries to convey; one despairs at the thought, what Buñuel would have made with its premise.

Les adieux à la reine (2012)

A look at the relationship between Marie Antoinette and one of her readers during the first days of the French Revolution.

Despite an interesting story, high production value and a good cast this movie fails to spark any sympathy and to appeal.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.

Very light comedy without any depth you might expect from its director, but the fatnatstical encounters with historical figures are quite entertaining.

Maltin***: "A divertissement from Allen filled with wistful charm, although it won't stand up to scrutiny; either you go along with its fantasy premise or you don't. Wilsin is the best in a long line of Woody surrogates because he truly makes the part his own."
