Snowtown (2011)

Based on true events, 16 year-old Jamie falls in with his mother's new boyfriend and his crowd of self-appointed neighborhood watchmen, a relationship that leads to a spree of torture and murder.

Dismal, realistic and at times harrowing crime tale is a discomforting watch, but is quite powerful due to its naturalism in a bleak Australian community and strong performances throughout.

The Babadook (2014)

A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

What at first appears to be a conventional horror thriller with a ghost slyly turns our expectations in different directions and surprises with an unusual ending.
