The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021)

Billie Holiday during her career is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting operation led by black Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she had a tumultuous affair.

Andra Day's fabulous performance aside, this biopic is well produced, but indecisive with its episodic narrative and, despite all effort, never quite transmits the racism and malevolence Billie Holiday was confronted with nor the true tragedy of her demise.

Moonlight (2016)

A chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young, African-American, gay man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

Brilliantly written and directed study of  a young man's struggle with concepts and restraints of masculinity and identity; multi-layered and with stellar performances throughout.

Bird Box (2018)

Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

Enthralling doomsday drama works - despite utilizing an irritating premise - due mainly on a good sense for atmosphere and charcter development and an excellent performance by Sandra Bullock.
