The Bat (1959)

A crazed killer known as "The Bat" is on the loose in a mansion full of people.

OK mystery drama obviously based on a stage play is neither very exciting nor scary, but well-made in an old-fashioned way.

Halliwell (no star): "Poor remake of a standard twenties stage thriller; everyone chews the scenery."

Maltin**1/2: "Faithful filming of the...play..."

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

A millionaire offers $10,000 to five people who agree to be locked in a large, spooky, rented house overnight with him and his wife.

Classic William Castle hokum with all the tricks and treats doesn't really want to be taken seriously; fun for what it is.

Halliwell (no star): "Gimmick ghost story with some (unexplained) gruesome moments; the most outlandish of its producer's trick films..."

Maltin***: "Campy fun."

The Raven (1963)

A magician, who has been turned into a raven, asks a former sorcerer for help.

From memory: At times hilarious horror comedy with a great cast genre stars goes on a bit too long, but the climactic finale makes it worth the waiting.

Halliwell*: "The rather splendid duel is a long time coming; the preliminaries are largely confined to chat in a single set, and the random jokes do not quite atone for the boredom."

Maltin***: "Funny horror satire...Climactic sorcerer's duel is a highlight."

The Tingler (1959)

An obsessed pathologist discovers and captures a parasitic creature that grows when fear grips its host.

Silly and a bit seedy plot is slowly told with some singular effective thrills and a creepy performance by Vincent Price.

Halliwell (no star): "Ridiculous shocker with dull handling but effective moments."

Maltin**1/2: "Preposterous but original shocker..."
