Cube (1997)

Six complete strangers with widely varying personalities are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps.

Inventive horror fantasy, a closed room(s) drama, no holds barred.

On rewatching: Highly original and imaginative sci-fi keeps its audience on guard with its puzzling premise.

Halliwell*: "Teasing low-budget science fiction movie that makes the most of its puzzling qualities."

Maltin**: "Nerves start to wear thin, which may also apply to the audience, as this intriguing film becomes highly unpleasant...with an unsatisfying conclusion."

In the Tall Grass (2019)

After hearing a young boy's cry for help, a sister and brother venture into a vast field of tall grass in Kansas but soon discover there may be no way out...and that something evil lurks within.

OK supernatural horror doesn't do much to enhance its (implausible) premise, but does deliver some mild shocks along the way.

Splice (2009)

A genetic engineers couple hope to achieve fame by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals for medical use.

Inventive variation on the Frankenstein theme, this time with a mad scientist couple and a both sexy and menacing creature, manages to touch several serious issues and is still entertaining.

Maltin**1/2: "Intelligently written and well acted, this begins well but becomes too much a standard horror film in the last couple of reels. Excellent effects."
