La vie devant soi (1977)

Madame Rosa lives in a sixth-floor walk-up in the Pigalle; she's a retired prostitute, Jewish and an Auschwitz survivor, a foster mom to children of other prostitutes.

From memory: Powerful melancholic tale is further enhanced by Simone Signoret's mesmerizing performance.

Halliwell (no star): "Splendidly acted but basically dreary fable twisted from a novel which took the child's point of view."

Maltin**1/2: "Signoret's magnetic performance gives substance to interesting but aimless film..."
