Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (1979)

In the fascist Italy of 1935, a painter trained as a doctor is exiled to a remote region near Eboli.

From memory: wonderfully elegiac and subtle tale with beautiful local and landscape cinematography, both an intimate study and a politically relevant statement.

Halliwell***: "An attractively faithful account of a book which was partial personal statement, part symbolism, part political opinion and part local colour. Non-Italians will be unable to extract the full flavour."

Maltin***1/2: "Slow-moving but rewarding chronicle...Stunningly directed..."
