Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)

Angel (1982)

Saxophonist Danny witnesses the murder of his band manager and a deaf-mute girl after a gig. Questioned by the police, he remembers only the orthopedic shoes of the killers' leader. So begins his quest to avenge them.

From memory: Compelling drama set amidst the topic of the Northern Ireland Troubles is an atmospheric character study (Stephen Rea excellent as the saxophonist/killer) amongst some great Irish settings.

Halliwell*: "Glumly Irish thriller with metaphysical overtones as well as references to the State of Ireland. Kenn narrative style is dissipated by overkill."

Maltin**: "Ambitious but pretentious, unrelentingly dreary melodrama..."

Space Is the Place (1974)

Uwasa no onna (1954)

Yukiko's fiance learns her mother runs a geisha house and ends their engagement. She despises what her mother does until one of her clients shows interest and starts to woo her.

Lesser known Kenji Mizuguchi melodrama nonetheless reveals his mastery for realistic, highly dramatic and heart-felt stories of female fates; superb cast, beautiful cinematography and excellent settings all around.

Maltin**1/2: "Minor Mizuguchi."

Android (1982)

A strange doctor secretly experiments with androids on his space station. His assistant is Max, a curious android who wants to see the world and meet a girl. Criminals hide on their station and soon violence erupts.

From memory: Low budget, butt neatly assembled sci-fi drama is mildly entertaining with a slightly silly android coming-of-age story; Klaus Kinski, of course, is always worth the watch.

Halliwell*: "Cheaply made, but a bobby-dazzler science fiction addicts."

Maltin***: "Entertaining sci-fi story...Charming, quirky ultra-low-budget film made on leftover sets from Roger Corman's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS."

Cinderella (1950)

Five Days One Summer (1982)

Ageing doctor Douglas takes his beautiful young mistress on an alpine walking holiday only to find that she is falling for the charms of a dashing tour guide.

From memory: Psychological melodrama goes a bit far combining the story of a complex and dubious love relationship with the thrills of dangerous mountaineering, but is mildly entertaining, if you can bear it.

Halliwell*: "Superbly photographed and crafted mountain movie, akin to the German epics of the early thirties.. Alas, the content is very thin."

Maltin**: "...story doesn't come off, despite impeccable production. Slow, ethereal, ultimately unsatisfying."
