New acquisition: François Truffaut

Hailee Steinfeld

Replicas (2018)

A scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident.

Mediocre sci-fi nonsense would have been more entertaining, if it showed some irony, but it doesn't.

Emma Stone

Hostiles (2017)

In 1892, a legendary Army Captain reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory.

Intense Western with splendid performances and cinematography has some harrowing scenes of violence; the anti-racist message, however, is presented without much depth and is quite predictable.

Eddie Albert

Die Architekten (1990)

The architect Daniel Brenner is in his late thirties when he receives his first challenging and lucrative commission: to design a cultural center for a satellite town in East-Berlin.

The last DEFA production is a strong, biting criticism of the ossified socialist state; its impact (and recognition) was lost in the turmoil of the downfall of the Berlin Wall.

Luis Buñuel

Conte d'automne (1998)

A widow's best friend tries to find her a new husband, but the ad posted in the newspaper attracts more than one possibility.

Éric Rohmer's version of a screwball comedy: ever so slightly humorous and very realistic.

Halliwell**: "Gently perceptive, witty drama, given a physical and spiritual autumnal setting, and one that is rooted in the realities of everyday life."

Maltin***1/2: "Delicious adult comedy...This is Rohmer at his best; glorious fun with a most appealing cast."
