Shanghai (2010)

An American expat returns to Shanghai in the months before Pearl Harbor due to the death of his friend.

Nicely produced and photographed spy thriller as a homage to the 40s Noir series; however, it's all on the surface, the star cast work only perfunctory, and the movie fails to spark any emotions.

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920)

Enemy (2013)

A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.

Somnambulant psychological drama conceived as one large riddle fascinates as a complex mystery, but the surprise end scene is grafted and quite a letdown.

Maltin**: "Ponderous psychological thriller...Strange, off-putting story, told in hushed tones, invites comparison to David Lynch's dreamlike films."

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words (2016)

A look at the life and work of avant-garde musician Frank Zappa.

Not as revelatory as announced, this is rather a nicely patched ready-made portrait of the artist who has always been entertaining not just with his music but also with what he had to say.

Survivor (2014)

During their search for a habitable planet the last living humans crash-land on a barren world, inhabited by bloodthirsty aliens and mysterious post-apocalyptic warriors.

Below-standard sci-fi action adventure with a silly and unoriginal plot, lots of hand-to-hand fighting action with aliens and hardly anything more than that.

Arrival (2016)

When twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world, linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the apparent alien visitors.
Satisfyingly intelligent sci-fi drama with great production and a good cast of characters emphasizes the science aspect (linguistics) and avoids which otherwise would have been another alien invasion and even offers some food for thought.
